Thomas Schweich in a New York Times Op-ed wrote that President-elect Barack Obama has chosen an all-star cabinet with great promise, but asserted that the next level of appointments — assistant secretaries, deputy assistant secretaries and ambassadors — are just as important.

These people will brief the cabinet officials as they confront harrowing domestic and foreign policy challenges. We need competent people in these positions. And to get those people, we need experienced screeners, interviewers and decision-makers in the Office of Presidential Personnel. What do you think about inexperienced young people running that office?

On the home page, Sven brought up the subject of the death penalty and suggesed that President Obama should not honor his promise to retain it. I wasn't aware that Mr. Obama had made any such promise, and could not find it when I searched the Obama Watchers database of promises.

Does anyone know if such a promise was actually made? And exactly where and when. I don't doubt that it's possible he made such a promise, but I just didn't hear or read about it. If he did, I think the administrator should add it to the database.

This the place to put all those hopes and dreams you may have for America under the leadership of President Obama. But even if you're pessimistic about Mr. Obama, your expectations are still welcomed. But please be civil….

President-elect Obama campaigned on a promise to withdraw all American combat brigades from Iraq within 16 months, or by May 2010.

While many of Mr. Obama’s supporters in the antiwar movement seem to have heard “end the war” as a promise to end the American troop presence in Iraq in 16 months, the president-elect has spoken only of a timeline for withdrawing combat troops, not all American forces.

See actual promise and share your thoughts…

An Obama aide recently said President-elect Obama is not planning to implement the promised windfall profit tax on oil companies because prices have dropped below $80 a barrel.

"President-elect Obama announced the policy during the campaign because oil prices were above $80 per barrel," the aide on Obama's transition team said. "They are currently below that now and expected to stay below that."

So is this a broken promise? Or just pragmatic realism.

Washington D.C. has been allotted only about $15 million in federal money to help pay for all major events in the city for the entire year, local officials say they are most concerned about the costs of handling the more than 1.5 million spectators expected to come here, the largest crowd in inaugural history.

Should President Obama allocate additional funds for Washington D.C. after he takes office?
