Expand Civilian Service Corps

President-elect Obama has made the following promises:

"Today, AmeriCorps — our nation's network of local, state and national service programs — has 75,000 slots. As president, I will increase that to 250,000."

"We'll expand USA Freedom Corps to create an online network where Americans can browse opportunities to volunteer."

"We will grow the Foreign Service to renew our commitment to diplomacy. We will double the size of the Peace Corps by its 50th anniversary in 2011."

"Today, there are 8,000 YouthBuild slots. We'll expand that to 50,000." — 12/5/07, Mt. Vernon, Iowa

Note: YouthBuild is a youth and community development program that simultaneously addresses core issues facing low-income communities: housing, education, employment, crime prevention, and leadership development. In YouthBuild programs, low-income young people ages 16-24 work toward their GED or high school diploma, learn job skills and serve their communities by building affordable housing, and transform their own lives and roles in society.
